British singer Will Young is marking the 25th anniversary of his debut single, “Evergreen,” with a meaningful lyrical update. In a performance released on September 28, 2026, titled “Evergreen (Live from The Evergreen 25th Anniversary Sessions),” Young replaced the word “girl” with “boy” in the chorus. The revised line now reads, “You’re the only boy that I need.”
This change reflects Young’s personal journey since he rose to fame as the winner of the inaugural season of Pop Idol in 2002. Having publicly come out as gay shortly after his victory, Young has frequently discussed his experiences in the public eye. This updated version of his signature hit aligns the song more closely with his identity and life over the past quarter-century.
Celebrating 25 Years of Music
The updated track coincides with the announcement of The Evergreen 25th Anniversary Tour, a 16-date UK tour scheduled for February and March 2027. Reflecting on his career, Young expressed his gratitude in a recent statement:
“To reach 25 years is a privilege and an honour. Who knew entering a competition by cutting out a piece from the newspaper would lead to the most exciting 20 weeks of my life in Pop Idol and a relationship with the public that has lasted for so long.”
