Marshals Season 2 Premiere Kills Off Major Character Dolly Weaver

October 6, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

The CBS neo-Western crime drama Marshals returned for its second season on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The premiere episode, titled “All Hat, No Cattle,” delivered a devastating twist with the shocking death of major character Dolly Weaver, played by recurring guest star Ellyn Jameson, following a high-stakes kidnapping rescue.

The episode picks up months after the events of the Season 1 finale. It centers on Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) as he races against time to rescue his kidnapped son, Tate (Brecken Merrill). Land-hungry rancher Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) orchestrated the abduction, demanding the deed to East Camp in exchange for the boy’s safe return.

During the rescue mission, Kayce tracked down Tom. He initially worked alongside Dolly, Tom’s daughter, who had grown close to Kayce throughout Season 1. Although Dolly tried to distance herself from her father’s criminal actions, loyalties fractured during a tense standoff. When law enforcement pursued Tom as he attempted to flee with Dolly trapped inside his Jeep Cherokee, the vehicle rolled down a steep hillside.

Tom survived the severe crash, but Dolly suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. In the emotional aftermath, a grieving Tom begged Kayce to end his life. Refusing to grant him an easy escape, Kayce left Tom alive to face legal consequences and bear the heavy reality of causing his own daughter’s death.

Showrunner Spencer Hudnut Explains Dolly Weaver’s Tragic Fate

Following the broadcast of the Season 2 premiere, showrunner Spencer Hudnut spoke with media outlets about the difficult creative decision to write off Dolly Weaver. Hudnut admitted that the writers’ room debated the character’s trajectory extensively.

“We went back and forth about it a lot, trying to figure out the best trajectory for her. In some ways, this is a reminder that people who grow close to Kayce Dutton tend to have tragic outcomes. In the back of Kayce’s mind, he brings chaos to other people’s lives, even though it was really her own father.”

Hudnut noted that any romantic partner following Monica (Kelsey Asbille) would face heavy scrutiny from viewers. With Monica’s passing established in the narrative, Dolly’s bond with Kayce served as an exploration of grief and trauma. The premiere’s final scene features Kayce struggling with single parenthood while staring at an old photograph of himself, Monica, and Tate. This moment marks one of the most emotional points of the series.

What Dolly Weaver’s Death Means for Season 2

Tom Weaver is currently behind bars, but executive producer Spencer Hudnut hinted that the stubborn rancher will return in later episodes. He will serve as a primary antagonist alongside Season 1 villain Randall Clegg (Michael Cudlitz). Tom’s poisonous influence and the fallout from Dolly’s tragic accident will continue to ripple through the narrative as Kayce navigates the dangers of Montana.

Marshals airs new episodes on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, with next-day streaming available on Paramount+.
