The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued flood and high wind watches for Cherokee County and surrounding areas in Central Alabama. These alerts, issued Thursday, Oct. 8, warn of potentially dangerous weather conditions as a storm system moves into the region this weekend.

Flood Watch Details

A Flood Watch is in effect for all of Central Alabama from Friday evening, Oct. 9, through Sunday morning, Oct. 11. Forecasters expect heavy rainfall to persist throughout the weekend.

Rainfall Projections:

  • Expected accumulation of 2 to 4 inches.
  • Potential for localized totals up to 5 inches.
  • Heightened risk of flash flooding in urban areas and locations with poor drainage.
  • Possible overflow of rivers, creeks, and low-lying areas.

High Wind Watch and Impact

A High Wind Watch is in effect from late Friday night, Oct. 9, through late Saturday night, Oct. 10. This watch covers 10 counties, including Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, and Cleburne.

The NWS warns that east winds could reach 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. These conditions present several risks:

  • Downed trees and power lines.
  • Widespread power outages.
  • Hazardous travel conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles like trucks and RVs.

Safety Recommendations

Local officials advise residents to prepare before conditions deteriorate. Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and other loose items to prevent them from becoming projectiles. Additionally, keep mobile devices charged and ensure flashlights and emergency supplies are accessible in case of power outages.

“A watch signals the potential for dangerous conditions; it does not mean those conditions are already occurring,” the NWS stated.

Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roadways, as water depth can be deceptive and dangerous. Because weather patterns can shift rapidly, residents should monitor local emergency information and updated NWS forecasts throughout the weekend for potential upgrades to warnings.

Storm Preparedness

Residents in flood-prone areas should have an evacuation plan ready if local authorities issue specific warnings. Keeping a battery-operated radio on hand will ensure access to critical updates if the power grid is compromised.
