While initial announcements attributed his passing entirely to pneumonia, official records indicate that Mackie suffered a fatal head injury following a fall just days before his death at age 87.
According to the death certificate obtained by media outlets, Mackie’s immediate cause of death is listed as a subarachnoid hemorrhage-defined as bleeding in the area between the brain and surrounding protective tissues-along with blunt head trauma. The document records that the incident occurred on September 11, 2026, while the iconic designer was staying in a guest house at the Palm Springs, California, home of his longtime design director, Joseph McFate.
Mackie passed away three days later on September 14 at Desert Regional Medical Center. A representative for Mackie clarified the circumstances of the accident in a statement to the press, confirming that a healthcare professional was present when the fall took place. The representative also noted that Mackie had been battling pneumonia both before and after his subsequent hospitalization.
