Severe thunderstorms and confirmed tornadoes swept through central North Carolina on Sunday, October 11. They left a trail of damaged homes, flooded streets, and uprooted trees across the Triangle and surrounding communities. Emergency management reports identified property damage and infrastructure disruptions spanning multiple counties, including Chatham, Harnett, Johnston, Wake, and Cumberland.

The severe weather outbreak prompted widespread tornado warnings throughout the region. Chatham County emergency dispatch confirmed that a tornado touched down approximately nine miles east of Pittsboro. The severe cell tracked through areas including Cary, Apex, the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, and the Crosswinds Boating Center, prompting a tornado warning that remained in active status until 12:15 p.m.

Widespread Damage Reported Across Central Counties

Emergency officials in Harnett County reported structural damage to multiple residential properties situated along Highway 401 and Josey Williams Road. High winds and falling timber also disrupted local transit corridors, bringing down trees across several communities and impacting railroad tracks in Clayton.

In Johnston County, local media and residents documented a weak tornado spinning up along U.S. 70 near the Clayton Village Shopping Center and the intersection of N.C. 42. Further south in Fayetteville, severe winds ripped part of the roof off a hotel and pushed vehicles into one another in a commercial parking lot.

Emergency Response and Travel Disruptions

The sudden escalation of severe weather forced immediate emergency responses and precautionary measures across central North Carolina:

  • Aviation Impacts: A temporary ground stop was implemented at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) as severe weather and potential storm debris threatened operations before normal schedules resumed later in the afternoon.
  • Evacuations and Rescue Operations: Thousands of attendees quickly evacuated the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary as conditions deteriorated rapidly. Emergency crews also responded to localized water rescues, including a vehicle stranded on Glenwood Avenue.
  • Power Outages: Duke Energy reported more than 1,000 customer outages concentrated primarily in the Chapel Hill area as strong wind gusts downed power lines.

State emergency management officials and local utility crews continued assessing impacted zones as the severe weather system pushed eastward. They urged residents in remaining warning areas to stay weather-aware and monitor local forecasts.
