Las Vegas Police Set to Reveal ID of Lake Mead Barrel Body

October 15, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Las Vegas police and county officials are scheduled to hold a news conference on Thursday afternoon to officially identify the man whose remains were discovered inside a 55-gallon barrel at Lake Mead in May 2022. The grim discovery, brought to light by receding water levels during a historic drought, immediately drew national attention and revived interest in Las Vegas’s historical underworld and mafia era.

Boaters discovered the rusted oil drum at Hemenway Harbor on May 1, 2022. Investigators quickly determined that the death was a homicide, noting that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound. Based on forensic examinations of the clothing found with the remains-including a short-sleeve button-down shirt, light blue jeans, a silver wristwatch, Kmart apparel, and blue-and-white tennis shoes-investigators estimated that the killing likely occurred between the mid-1970s and early 1980s.

The Investigation and Advances in DNA Testing

For more than three years, the case remained a high-profile mystery. Law enforcement officers utilized extensive DNA profiling and sought assistance from outside agencies. Just weeks prior to the identification announcement, the Clark County Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner released facial approximation images generated by the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, in an effort to generate viable tips from the public.

Speaking at a previous update, Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse emphasized the reliance on community links. “As good as a DNA profile is, it’s only as good as what you have to compare it to,” Rouse said. “Obviously the next steps would be to get it out to the community in hopes that we have some good links to individuals that could be considered for testing.”

Key Officials Scheduled for the Reveal

The scheduled Thursday news conference features a panel of key local and forensic figures involved in cracking the decades-old cold case. Speakers expected at the briefing include:

  • Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse
  • LVMPD Homicide Lt. Robert Price
  • Dr. Jason Beaman from the School of Forensic Sciences at Oklahoma State University
  • Clark County Chairman Michael Naft

One of Multiple Lake Mead Discoveries in 2022

The body in the barrel was the most prominent among several sets of human remains uncovered as the water levels at Lake Mead plummeted to historic lows. County records show that four distinct human remains cases surfaced at the reservoir in 2022 alone. While the barrel victim’s identity remained pending until now, three other cases were successfully resolved through DNA testing:

  • Claude Russell Pensinger: 52, of Las Vegas, whose skeletal remains were found near Boulder Beach in July and August 2022. He had disappeared on July 14, 1998, and his cause of death was undetermined.
  • Donald P. Smith: 39, of North Las Vegas, whose remains were recovered in the Callville Bay area in October 2022. Authorities determined he drowned in April 1974.
  • Thomas Erndt: 42, of Las Vegas, whose remains were found in the Callville Bay area in May 2002 [sic – recovered May 2022]. He reportedly drowned on August 2, 2002, with an undetermined cause and manner of death.

Thursday’s announcement is expected to provide definitive closure to a case that captured the public imagination for years, bridging decades of local history with modern forensic science.
