A routine weather handover on NBC’s TODAY turned into a lighthearted moment on Monday, October 19. A technical malfunction prompted an impromptu bear hug between veteran meteorologist Al Roker and co-anchor Carson Daly.
The broadcast moved along normally as co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Sheinelle Jones-who filled in for Craig Melvin-passed the segment to Roker for the morning weather report. Roker quickly realized his voice was not carrying properly across the studio.
"Well guys, good morning," Roker said. His voice came through muffled as he reached for his equipment pack to check the audio settings.
As Roker fumbled with the technical issue, his fellow anchors offered various quick fixes from the desk. Jones suggested clicking the switch and making sure the pack was powered on. Guthrie jokingly advised him to speak much louder.
Carson Daly Steps In With an Unconventional Fix
Daly decided to take matters into his own hands. Leaving his seat at the anchor desk, the co-anchor stepped directly into the frame as Roker continued troubleshooting his microphone pack.
Instead of offering verbal advice, Daly wrapped Roker in a tight, full-body bear hug. This allowed the meteorologist’s voice to be picked up by Daly’s working microphone.
"Oooh baby," Roker exclaimed as Daly pressed closely against him live on air.
Al Roker Reacts to the Live Broadcast Moment
The improvised audio solution worked just long enough for Roker’s equipment to be properly adjusted. Daly promptly released his co-anchor, allowing the morning news program to transition back to standard formatting.
Once freed from the embrace, a smiling Roker collected his thoughts, straightened his suit jacket, and dryly declared to the rest of the anchor desk, "That was… that was awkward."
Guthrie immediately seized the opportunity for a lighthearted callback, referencing the morning team’s recent international broadcasts. "We got really close in Ireland," she joked.
"We did get a little too close as you can see," Roker quipped back. "Luck of the Irish right there."
With the technical glitch resolved and the studio crew laughing off the display of affection, Roker turned back toward the digital weather map to deliver the rest of Monday’s forecast without further interruption.
