Philadelphia television station WPVI-6ABC has named longtime meteorologist Adam Joseph its next chief meteorologist. This places a familiar and trusted face in charge of its weather coverage. The appointment follows the retirement of Cecily Tynan, who stepped down after a 31-year career with the network. The station officially announced the leadership transition during a broadcast segment that highlighted Joseph’s two-decade career with Action News and his ties to the regional broadcasting community.

For Joseph, a Massachusetts native who joined 6ABC as a weekend meteorologist in 2005, the promotion is a milestone. Reflecting on his passion during the broadcast announcement, Joseph shared that weather has always been a constant in his life. He noted that he was connected to the profession from birth, having been born during a severe flood that nearly prevented his parents from reaching the hospital.

A Two-Decade Journey at Action News

Over the past 20 years, Adam Joseph has become a core part of Philadelphia’s local news landscape. Before stepping into the chief meteorologist role, he served as the weekday senior meteorologist for the station’s 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts. His ability to distill complex weather patterns into clear forecasts has earned him a dedicated following across the Delaware Valley.

WPVI-TV General Manager John W. Morris praised the selection, emphasizing Joseph’s connection to viewers. “Adam is a beloved figure in the region’s broadcasting community and a viewer favorite,” Morris stated. “His enthusiasm and dedication to forecasting, authenticity and ability to clearly explain complex weather systems have made him a trusted voice across the region and a clear choice to step into this role.”

Throughout his tenure at 6ABC, Joseph has reported from unconventional locations, including aboard a hot air balloon, dangling from a trapeze, and following a chilly polar plunge. He has also been a fixture at regional community traditions, contributing to the 6abc Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade broadcasts and previews of the Philadelphia Flower Show and Auto Show.

Honoring a Legacy and Looking Forward

Joseph steps into the role previously held by Cecily Tynan, a figure in Philadelphia television who retired in August. During the announcement segment, Tynan appeared via a recorded video message to pass the torch to her longtime colleague. “I am so thrilled for you, I am honored to pass the clicker on to you,” Tynan said. “Here’s to twenty-one more years.”

Family members also celebrated the milestone. Joseph’s mother, Nancy, expressed pride during the broadcast segment, declaring that her son was “made for this moment.”

Professional Background and Accolades

  • Education: Earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Lyndon State College.
  • Early Career: Served as chief meteorologist at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and later worked at WSAZ-TV in Charleston-Huntington, where he earned the AMS Seal of Approval.
  • Industry Recognition: Named Philadelphia’s Best Meteorologist by Philadelphia Magazine in 2009 and honored with a 40 Under 40 Award by the Philadelphia Business Journal in 2011.

Personal Life and Community Involvement

Away from the weather center, Joseph maintains an active lifestyle in the Philadelphia suburbs, where he lives with his husband, Karl, and their two children. He made local broadcasting history in 2014 by becoming the first on-air news anchor in Philadelphia to publicly come out as gay.

An endurance athlete, Joseph has completed more than a dozen triathlons since 2001 and regularly participates in weightlifting, running, cycling, and swimming. He is also involved in regional philanthropy, supporting organizations such as the American Cancer Society and local hos**ce care. Though he shares his passions for cooking, gardening, and holiday decorating with viewers, his primary focus remains delivering precise weather coverage to the Philadelphia region as its new chief meteorologist.
