Philadelphia television station 6abc has promoted veteran forecaster Adam Joseph to chief meteorologist. He fills the position left vacant after Cecily Tynan retired in August. The station announced the promotion on Monday, October 19, 2026. This officially places Joseph in charge of core weather coverage after more than two decades with Action News.

Stepping Into the Chief Meteorologist Role

Joseph will now deliver forecasts during the flagship Action News broadcasts at 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. He previously served as a weekday senior meteorologist, appearing regularly on the 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts. Speculation about his promotion grew after he teased a major announcement before the station’s Monday evening broadcast.

John W. Morris, WPVI-TV general manager, praised Joseph’s connection to the audience. “Adam is a beloved figure in the region’s broadcasting community and a viewer favorite,” Morris stated. “His enthusiasm and dedication to forecasting, authenticity and ability to clearly explain complex weather systems have made him a trusted voice across the region and a clear choice to step into this role.”

A Long Career With Action News

Joseph joined WPVI-TV in 2005 as a weekend meteorologist before moving to weekday and primetime weather slots. Over the past twenty years, he has become a staple of Philadelphia television. He has contributed to station specials including the 6abc Dunkin’ Thanksgiving Day Parade, alongside preview specials for the Philadelphia Flower Show and Auto Show. His reach also extends nationally through guest appearances on ABC News’ “Good Morning America.”

His work has earned strong local recognition. Philadelphia Magazine named him Philadelphia’s Best Meteorologist in 2009. The Philadelphia Business Journal honored him with a 40 Under 40 Award in 2011 for professional excellence and community involvement. He has also captured multiple Best On-Air Meteorologist accolades from Main Line Today.

Background and Community Involvement

Before arriving in Philadelphia, Joseph served as chief meteorologist at WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He later worked at WSAZ-TV in Charleston-Huntington, where he earned the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Seal of Approval for Television. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Lyndon State College.

Outside of work, Joseph engages in local community outreach with organizations such as Hos**ce and the American Cancer Society. An active athlete, he is an avid weightlifter, runner, cyclist, and swimmer who has completed more than a dozen triathlons. He lives in the Philadelphia suburbs with his husband, Karl, and their two children.

Succeeding a Philadelphia Broadcasting Icon

Joseph succeeds Cecily Tynan, who spent more than three decades with Action News. Tynan became the station’s first female chief meteorologist in 2009 and concluded her historic career with her final broadcast on Monday, August 31, 2026. With Joseph’s promotion, 6abc continues its tradition of elevating internal talent to lead its weather department.
