Crazy Rich Asians Series Officially Ordered at HBO

October 10, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

HBO has officially greenlit an eight-episode television series continuation of the 2018 global box office hit Crazy Rich Asians. The upcoming one-hour original drama series will reunite core cast members Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng as series regulars, alongside Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, who is set to return in a recurring capacity. Announced on October 8, the project shifts the franchise from the big screen to television, picking up the story directly after the events of the original movie.

Expanding Kevin Kwan’s Fictional World on HBO

The 2018 feature film, directed by Jon M. Chu and based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling 2013 novel, was a massive commercial success, grossing more than $230 million globally against a $30 million budget and earning two Golden Globe nominations. While a feature film sequel was discussed for years, the creative team ultimately chose the television format to further explore the expansive worlds and complex characters found across Kwan’s book trilogy, which also includes China Rich Girlfriend (2015) and Rich People Problems (2017).

“This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to explore the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” said showrunner and executive producer Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film. Lim noted that the writers’ room is already active, bringing back the distinct blend of glitz, humor, and heart that defined the original cinematic release.

Returning Cast and Production Details

The series will anchor its narrative around the returning principal players:

  • Constance Wu as Rachel Chu
  • Henry Golding as Nick Young
  • Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng
  • Michelle Yeoh as Eleanor Young (recurring role)

Production for the series is scheduled to begin in 2027. The project is co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television. Original director Jon M. Chu will executive produce via Electric Somewhere alongside Adele Lim via 100 Tigers, author Kevin Kwan, and Emmy-winning producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force. Additional executive producers include Chloe Dan, Jeannine Tang, Naia Cucukov Richards, and Rose Lam.

Leadership and Network Perspectives

HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery executives highlighted the cultural impact of the franchise and their enthusiasm for bringing the ensemble back together. Casey Bloys, co-chair and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, praised the return of the core talent, noting that global fans of the film and novels are eager for the next chapter.

“From a bestselling novel to a blockbuster film and now television, Crazy Rich Asians has solidified its place as one of the most beloved stories in popular culture,” said Channing Dungey, chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks. Network leadership expressed confidence that the transition to an episodic format will allow deeper storytelling for the beloved characters originally introduced to audiences nearly a decade ago.
