A historic Colonial Revival mansion in Los Angeles has officially changed hands for $4.445 million. Located in the desirable Toluca Lake neighborhood, this sprawling estate is best known for being owned by two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and acclaimed television writer-producer Brenda Hampton.

Originally constructed in 1940, the two-story residence was designed by legendary architect Paul Revere Williams, who is often called the “architect-to-the-stars.” The property spans approximately 6,300 square feet and sits on a spacious double lot measuring more than half an acre at the end of a long, private driveway.

A Rich History of Hollywood Owners

Long before Denzel Washington lived here, the Toluca Lake home hosted many notable figures in the entertainment industry. Its first famous owner was comedian and actor Leon Errol. In the 1950s, the estate belonged to prominent actor William Holden and his wife, actress Brenda Marshall.

During the Holdens’ time there, the residence served as the backdrop for a famous piece of American history. On March 4, 1952, following their wedding at the Little Brown Church in the Valley, Ronald and Nancy Reagan held their wedding reception and cake-cutting ceremony at the Holden home.

Denzel Washington and Brenda Hampton Eras

Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, purchased the historic estate in 1988 for $1.1 million. They lived in the home for 12 years. This period included major career milestones for the actor, such as his acclaimed roles in Malcolm X and Philadelphia. The Washingtons sold the property in 2000 for $1.9 million.

Television writer-producer Brenda Hampton-known for creating hit shows like 7th Heaven and co-creating The Secret Life of the American Teenager-purchased the estate from Washington in 2000. Hampton owned the historic property for nearly two decades before listing it in March 2019 for $4.495 million. It sold six weeks later for $4.445 million. Craig Strong of Compass served as the listing agent, and Michael Earley of Douglas Elliman represented the buyer.
