Emergency crews rushed to the Quaker Oats facility in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday evening, October 24, following an explosion and fire. The incident sent a towering black smoke plume across the city and caused significant traffic congestion.
Cedar Rapids Police and Fire departments were dispatched to the industrial site at approximately 4:45 p.m. EST. First responders located evidence of an explosion and a subsequent fire that damaged parts of the building, leaving shattered windows and heavy exterior damage covered in black ash.
Emergency Response and Worker Safety
Within 45 minutes of the initial dispatch, emergency officials successfully accounted for all plant workers. The Battalion Chief’s office characterized the incident as ongoing as firefighters worked to secure the perimeter and suppress the flames. By 7:00 p.m., fire officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities had been reported.
Witnesses told local affiliate KCRG that they felt a distinct tremor before noticing thick black smoke billowing from behind the Quaker Oats facility. The active emergency response also created heavy traffic delays and backups along Interstate 380, particularly near the highway’s “S” curve as motorists navigated around emergency vehicles.
A spokesperson for PepsiCo Foods US, the parent company of Quaker Oats, confirmed the incident in a statement. “First responders are on-site working to ensure the fire is controlled and quickly put out. Details of how the fire started will be investigated,” the spokesperson said.
Official Reactions and Historical Incidents
State and federal officials shared their concerns and expressed gratitude for local emergency personnel. Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley posted on X that he was alerted to the blaze, stating he was praying for the safety of those near the building and for the first responders.
Representative and Senate candidate Josh Turek, alongside Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson, also released statements thanking first responders for their swift action to protect the local community and keep residents safe.
The historic Cedar Rapids manufacturing site has faced previous fire incidents. In 2024, personnel were evacuated, and one employee was transported to the hospital after a piece of machinery produced heavy smoke. In 2018, firefighters responded to a product fire inside an oven that engulfed the tenth floor in smoke. Decades earlier, in 1905, the American Cereal Company plant suffered a catastrophic explosion caused by spontaneous combustion, requiring a full rebuild of the facility.
Authorities and fire investigators remain on the scene to determine the exact cause of the explosion and evaluate the full scope of structural damage to the plant.
