A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Israel made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after an alleged stabbing incident inside the cockpit on Wednesday. Israeli officials and passenger accounts indicate that the co-pilot attacked the captain, sending the Boeing 737-800 into a steep, rapid descent before crew members and passengers intervened.
According to flight-tracking data and statements from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Flydubai flight FZ1073 was cruising at 34,000 feet over Jordan when the emergency began. The aircraft suddenly plummeted between 14,000 and 17,000 feet within minutes, prompting immediate fears of a deliberate crash or hijacking. Israeli security agencies, including the IDF, Mossad, and Shin Bet, are actively assessing the event as a possible terrorist attack.
Cockpit Struggle and Rapid Descent
Passengers onboard recounted a terrifying sequence of events as the plane lost altitude abruptly. Passenger Almog Italie described the drop as feeling like severe turbulence before realizing a life-or-death confrontation was taking place at the front of the aircraft.
Another passenger, Miryam Shira Ohayon, told reporters via phone that the co-pilot attempted to murder the pilot to carry out a suicide attack. According to Israeli defense officials, the wounded captain-subsequently identified by the Israel Foreign Ministry as Indian national Capt. Smit Machchhar-managed to use his remaining energy to click open the cockpit door release.
Alerted passengers and on-duty crew members rushed forward, entered the flight deck, and overpowered the co-pilot as he reportedly bashed the instrument panel. A reserve Flydubai crew also traveling on the flight then took control of the aircraft, stabilized it, and diverted toward Tabuk Airport (TUU) in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.
Official Responses and Investigation
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz praised the actions of the passengers, stating that the disaster was thwarted solely through their heroism in storming the cockpit and subduing the attacker. Netanyahu echoed these sentiments, confirming that the co-pilot was placed under arrest and is being questioned by Saudi authorities.
An Omani official confirmed that the suspect was born in Oman and holds Omani citizenship. Meanwhile, Flydubai issued a cautious statement emphasizing that the underlying motives behind the altercation remain unknown and urging the public to refrain from premature speculation while formal investigations are underway.
Saudi authorities confirmed that two crew members sustained injuries and received medical treatment at a local hospital. No passengers were reported injured during the harrowing flight. Replacement aircraft were dispatched to Tabuk to transport the passengers safely to their destinations, concluding an incident that placed aviation security agencies across the Middle East on maximum alert.
