A major aviation disaster was narrowly averted on September 30, 2026. Passengers and crew aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 stepped in to subdue an Omani co-pilot who allegedly attacked the captain in a mid-air hijacking attempt. The Boeing aircraft, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers-including 27 children-was forced to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following the violent cockpit struggle.
Mid-Air Altercation and Severe Altitude Drop
According to Israeli security agencies and international reports, the incident unfolded shortly after the commercial airliner entered Jordanian airspace. The Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed the Indian captain and attempted to take manual control of the aircraft by force, triggering a sudden and alarming nosedive.
Flight tracking data revealed that the Boeing aircraft dropped more than 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. It logged a maximum descent rate exceeding 30,000 feet per minute. Amid the physical struggle inside the cockpit, the flight transmitted emergency code 7700 for a general emergency. This was followed by code 7500, which indicates unlawful interference or hijacking.
Passengers and Off-Duty Pilot Intervene
As the aircraft plummeted, the flight crew issued urgent calls for assistance. Tzvika Manes, CEO of Bank Leumi’s underwriting arm and a passenger on the flight, recounted the harrowing experience to media outlets, describing how travelers rushed forward to help.
Alongside an off-duty pilot traveling on the aircraft, several passengers physically restrained the rogue co-pilot and tied him down to secure the cabin. Both the captain and co-pilot sustained severe injuries during the altercation. The situation required immediate intervention to stabilize the aircraft before safely diverting to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Security Response and Investigation
The emergency landing prompted an immediate high-level international response. In Israel, the Israel Air Force scrambled fighter jets and briefly raised national airspace alert levels. Defense establishments-including the Israel Defense Forces, Mossad, and Shin Bet-convened emergency security assessments led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Saudi aviation and medical officials at Tabuk Airport confirmed that both injured pilots were hospitalized upon landing. Israeli security authorities are treating the incident as a suspected terrorist attack. Ongoing investigations are focused on the co-pilot’s motives and the sequence of events inside the cockpit.
