Hot Air Balloons Strike Power Lines in Albuquerque Near Fiesta

October 5, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Two separate hot air balloon incidents involving electrical lines occurred on consecutive days near Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the annual Balloon Fiesta. Fortunately, all four occupants involved across both events walked away without injury, according to local emergency responders and state police officials.

The latest incident took place on Sunday, October 4, 2026. A blue hot air balloon made contact with electrical wires near Barstow Road and Glendale Avenue Northeast, located just north of Alameda and near La Cueva High School. Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) and the New Mexico State Police were dispatched to the scene after receiving calls reporting that the balloon’s canopy was draped over the lines with two individuals trapped inside the basket.

According to AFR Public Information Officer Lt. Jason Fejer, units from AFR Station 20-with Ladder 20 assuming command-arrived to find the balloon securely caught in the lines. Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) utility crews were called to safely secure and de-energize the power lines. Once hazards were mitigated, the two occupants were safely removed from the basket, evaluated by emergency medical personnel, and escorted to a safe area with no reported injuries.

Consecutive Days of Mishaps During Balloon Fiesta Opening Weekend

The Sunday morning incident immediately followed a remarkably similar collision on Saturday, October 3, 2026, which marked the opening day of the 54th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. During Saturday’s events, another balloon became entangled in power lines near the Journal Center area while attempting a landing south of Balloon Fiesta Park.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue units dispatched before 8 a.m. on Saturday located that balloon’s basket stabilized on the ground with two passengers still inside. Emergency crews safely extracted both occupants after confirming the lines were de-energized. State police reported that surface wind shifts close to the ground heavily contributed to the landing difficulties experienced by pilots during the busy opening morning.

Safety Protocols Prevent Serious Injuries

While the New Mexico State Police reported a busy opening day responding to multiple balloon mishaps across the region-including instances of balloons landing in commercial parking lots and being pushed into light poles by sudden gusts-authorities praised the quick coordination between emergency services and utility providers.

  • Sunday, October 4: Blue hot air balloon strikes power lines near Barstow Road and Glendale Avenue NE; 2 occupants uninjured.
  • Saturday, October 3: Hot air balloon becomes entangled near Journal Center; 2 passengers safely extracted after line de-energization.
  • Emergency Response: Coordinated efforts by Albuquerque Fire Rescue, New Mexico State Police, and PNM utility crews ensured zero injuries or electrical shocks.

Utility crews and public safety officials continue to remind pilots and spectators of the unpredictable nature of low-level surface winds during mass ascension events, emphasizing that standard emergency response protocols successfully prevented any structural casualties or injuries during the consecutive power line strikes.
