Hulu & ESPN Announce Michael Jackson Super Bowl Documentary

Hulu and ESPN have announced plans for a feature-length documentary chronicling Michael Jackson’s legendary 1993 Super Bowl XXVII halftime performance. Titled Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl, the project is scheduled to premiere in February 2027 across Hulu and ESPN platforms. This release is timed strategically for the annual NFL championship event.

The upcoming film explores the creation, meticulous behind-the-scenes preparation, and lasting cultural impact of the landmark broadcast. According to official project descriptions, the documentary features rare, previously unseen footage of Jackson and his creative team as they mapped out the historic set at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Transforming the Super Bowl Halftime Show

Before Jackson took the stage on January 31, 1993, the NFL’s midgame intermission was widely treated as skippable television. It typically featured marching bands or nostalgic legacy acts. The previous year, the Fox network successfully counterprogrammed the Super Bowl XXVI halftime show with an In Living Color special that drew away more than 22 million viewers.

Determined to reclaim the audience, the NFL secured Jackson as the sole headliner for Super Bowl XXVII. The broadcast generated massive numbers, drawing 133 million viewers and marking a historic milestone where the second half of the game out-rated the first. Jackson opened his set by standing completely motionless on stage for two full minutes in a black-and-gold military-style jacket. He instantly captivated the global audience before launching into a hit-filled medley.

The five-song setlist featured iconic performances of “Jam,” “Billie Jean,” and “Black or White.” It concluded with a massive grand finale of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World,” which brought more than 3,000 local children onto the field. That single performance permanently changed television history, paving the way for future blockbuster halftime acts like Prince, U2, Beyoncé, and Bruce Springsteen.

Behind the Production Team

Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl is directed and produced by Bao Nguyen. Nguyen previously helmed Netflix’s acclaimed documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, which chronicled the creation of the 1985 charity single “We Are the World.”

The documentary is a collaborative production involving Skydance Sports, Optimum Productions, Into the Deep End Films, and NFL Films. Producers include Jesse Sisgold, Jon Weinbach, and Lauren Gaffney for Skydance Sports; John Branca, executor of the Michael Jackson estate, for Optimum Productions; and Amit Dey for Into the Deep End Films. Executive producers feature Karen Langford for Optimum Productions, alongside Ross Ketover, Ken Rodgers, Keith Cossrow, and Jessica Boddy for NFL Films.

Continuing the Michael Jackson Legacy

The documentary arrives approximately one year after Lionsgate’s theatrical biographical film Michael hit box offices globally. That film featured Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in the lead role. With a sequel to the biopic already in early development, the upcoming Hulu and ESPN project offers fans an unscripted, detailed look at the definitive moment that cemented Jackson’s status as the King of Pop.

An exact premiere date within February 2027 has not yet been announced by Hulu or ESPN.
