South Korea’s stock market extended a sharp reversal as technology shares tumbled. This downturn came amid mounting pressure ahead of US inflation data and major corporate earnings reports. The benchmark Kospi fell 4.03 percent to 6,126.65 during early trading after opening 3.1 percent lower, driven down by massive losses in heavyweight semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
Semiconductor Giants Lead Market Plunge
The downturn hit South Korea’s technology-heavy market hard. Individual stock performances reflected widespread selling pressure across major sectors. According to market data from the Korea JoongAng Daily, Samsung Electronics dropped 4.79 percent, while competitor SK Hynix declined by 5.61 percent.
The broader sell-off extended beyond the technology sector to impact other prominent industrial and automotive firms. Hyundai Motor recorded a 5 percent drop, and Hanwha Aerospace lost 3.71 percent as institutional and foreign investors adjusted their portfolio holdings.
Currency Movement and Bright Spots
Amid the broader market rout, the foreign exchange market showed relatively contained movement. The Korean won weakened slightly by 0.1 won from the previous trading session, settling at 1,335.70 won against the US dollar.
Despite the severe downturn across manufacturing and tech sectors, select entertainment companies managed to buck the prevailing trend. Entertainment agencies Hybe and SM posted gains, advancing 1.47 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively, as investors sought pockets of resilience.
Broader Economic Pressures
Analysts note that the steep decline in the Kospi reflects compounding anxieties. These include shifting expectations surrounding artificial intelligence valuations, rising Treasury yields, and persistent geopolitical tensions affecting energy prices. Market participants are closely monitoring upcoming US consumer price index figures and corporate earnings disclosures to gauge the near-term economic trajectory.
