Laviolette Debuts as Kings Coach Against Avalanche in Opener

Peter Laviolette makes his official debut as the head coach of the Los Angeles Kings on September 30, 2026. His squad faces the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena in Denver for the NHL season opener. Taking over the bench for his seventh NHL franchise, Laviolette steps into a high-stakes divisional matchup. This game serves as a direct rematch of last spring’s Western Conference First Round.

A New Era for the Los Angeles Kings

The Kings enter the 2026-27 campaign under a completely revamped leadership structure. Longtime franchise icon Anze Kopitar retired after 20 illustrious seasons in Los Angeles. His departure leaves a massive leadership void in the locker room and on the ice. Veteran defenseman Drew Doughty steps up to fill those shoes, taking over as the team’s newly appointed captain in his 19th NHL season.

Laviolette inherits a roster seeking to transition away from its traditional defense-first identity. The team wants a faster, more aggressive attacking style. Los Angeles struggled significantly with offensive production last season. They finished 23rd in goals per road game and ranked near the bottom of the league in power-play efficiency. To combat these scoring deficiencies, the front office added seasoned forwards Mats Zuccarello, Erik Haula, and Scott Laughton during the offseason.

Colorado Avalanche Enter with Momentum and Stability

On the opposing side, the Colorado Avalanche enter the new season riding a wave of stability and historic franchise success. Head coach Jared Bednar signed a four-year contract extension on the morning of the season opener. This secures his leadership role through the 2030-31 season. Bednar is the winningest coach in franchise history. He guided Colorado to a franchise-record 121 points and the Presidents’ Trophy during the 2025-26 campaign.

Colorado’s high-powered attack is once again spearheaded by center Nathan MacKinnon. He is coming off a dominant season where he captured the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy by leading the league with 53 goals. MacKinnon now looks to become the first player to win the goal-scoring title in consecutive seasons since Auston Matthews in 2021 and 2022. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood gets the nod to start in net for the Avalanche, looking to build upon a strong preparatory campaign.

Injury Troubles and Projected Lineups

Both teams face notable roster hurdles as they kick off the 82-game schedule. The Kings begin their season shorthanded. They are missing key contributors like Kevin Fiala, who is recovering from leg surgery, alongside injured skaters Corey Perry and Joel Edmundson. Meanwhile, the Avalanche are managing their own depth concerns. They are playing without sidelined forwards Logan O’Connor and Zachary L’Heureux.

Despite the early-season adversity, Wednesday night’s matchup offers an immediate measuring stick for both clubs in the Western Conference. Puck drop is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET. National television and streaming coverage are provided via HBO Max, truTV, and TNT.
