A man died after entering a tiger enclosure and being attacked at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in South Yorkshire on Saturday, 10 October, at 1:35 pm, according to South Yorkshire Police. Emergency crews rushed to the scene to treat the man, while authorities evacuated the park and launched an immediate investigation into the tragic incident.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed that the man suffered severe injuries after accessing the restricted habitat. Medical personnel provided urgent care at the scene, but despite their best efforts, the man was pronounced dead. Officers have since informed his family, who are receiving support from specialist teams.

Emergency Response and Park Evacuation

Following the breach, Yorkshire Wildlife Park management activated its emergency response protocols. The Yorkshire Ambulance Service deployed an air ambulance, two land ambulances, and a doctor to the location near Doncaster.

Visitors described being ushered away from the area by staff as the emergency unfolded. Karmelle Pelham, a 39-year-old visitor from Worksop, recounted being moved from the lemur enclosure deeper into the park before emergency aircraft began circling overhead. Observers reported that black tarpaulin screens were quickly erected around the tiger enclosure as police and medical responders worked at the site.

Management announced that the popular attraction would remain closed for the remainder of the weekend out of respect for those affected and to assist authorities with their inquiries.

Status of the Animal and Police Investigation

Videos appearing to show portions of the incident have circulated on social media platforms. South Yorkshire Police issued a direct appeal urging members of the public to refrain from sharing the distressing footage online.

Addressing concerns regarding the animal, police confirmed that the tiger remained uninjured inside the enclosure throughout the incident. Authorities reiterated that there was no wider risk to the public at any time.

In a statement released on Saturday evening, a park spokesperson expressed profound sorrow over the event:

We are deeply saddened by today’s tragic incident. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the person who has lost their life. We are working closely with the police and relevant authorities.

About the Land of the Tigers Exhibit

Opened in 2011, the ‘Land of the Tigers’ reserve at Yorkshire Wildlife Park is a purpose-built, two-acre habitat designed for endangered Amur tigers. The naturalistic enclosure features woodlands, grasslands, and a waterfall pool, viewable by visitors via a raised wooden walkway.

The facility houses rare Amur tigers-a critically endangered subspecies with an estimated 500 individuals remaining in the wild. Investigators continue to review the exact circumstances surrounding how the visitor managed to enter the secure animal territory.
