Actor Martin Freeman has married his longtime partner, French actress and writer Rachel Benaissa, in a private ceremony earlier this year. Representatives for the 55-year-old Sherlock star confirmed the marriage following weeks of speculation.
The couple, who have been together since 2020, debuted their wedding bands during a joint red carpet appearance at the premiere of the film A Long Winter. Freeman wore a classic gold wedding band, while 32-year-old Benaissa wore a large emerald-and-diamond engagement ring alongside her wedding band.
A Quiet Celebration and Red Carpet Debut
Specific details of the private wedding ceremony remain closely guarded. The confirmation follows Freeman’s appearance at the BFI London Film Festival, where Benaissa joined him and displayed her new wedding jewellery.
The pair have kept a relatively low profile throughout their relationship. Freeman previously offered glimpses into their domestic life during a podcast appearance, mentioning that they share a passion for cooking and food.
Family Ties and Career Background
Benaissa is a trained actress and screenwriter who studied at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin. Her acting credits include small roles in television series such as BBC’s Normal People and This Way Up, as well as Netflix’s Irish Wish. She also writes dark comedy-horror screenplays and placed as a runner-up in Outstanding Screenplay’s TV pilot competition.
Benaissa shares a close bond with Freeman’s two children, daughter Grace, 18, and son Joe, 19. Freeman shares these children with his former partner, actress Amanda Abbington, with whom he was together from 2000 until their separation in 2016.
Neither Freeman nor Benaissa have released a formal public statement regarding the wedding beyond the confirmation provided by the actor’s representative, choosing to celebrate their marriage privately.
