Mercedes-AMG has officially unveiled the 2028 GT SUV, an all-electric performance vehicle designed to bring the brand’s dedicated sports car engineering to the full-size SUV segment. Announced on October 17, 2026, the model will launch in three distinct versions, with the flagship GT63 delivering up to 1,153 horsepower. According to automaker specifications, U.S. dealership arrivals are anticipated in the summer of 2027.
The GT SUV stands as the first full-size vehicle developed completely in-house by Mercedes-AMG at its headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany. It also represents the second model built on the dedicated AMG.EA high-performance electric architecture, following the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Production of the vehicle is slated for Sindelfingen, Germany.
Lineup Architecture and Powertrain Specifications
The model range comprises three variants: the entry-level GT53, the mid-tier GT55, and the range-topping GT63. The drivetrain layouts vary across the lineup to balance efficiency and high-output performance:
- GT53: Equipped with two permanently excited synchronous motors producing a combined 536 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, utilizing a two-speed rear transmission.
- GT55: Features three axial-flux electric motors-one at the front and two at the rear-generating 805 horsepower and 1,372 lb-ft of torque with variable all-wheel drive.
- GT63: Also utilizes a three-motor axial-flux layout, cranking out a peak 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque.
Mercedes-AMG claims the GT63 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds using a one-foot rollout (2.6 seconds without), reaching an electronically capped top speed of 168 mph. The GT63 and GT55 models boast a sustained continuous output figure of up to 711 horsepower, engineered to prevent power fade during heavy, repeated acceleration runs.
Advanced Battery, Charging, and Dynamics
Powering the higher-tier models is an 800-volt battery pack featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells derived from Formula 1 technology. The GT63 and GT55 house a 128-kWh battery pack supporting DC fast-charging up to 710 kW, which can replenish up to 282 miles of WLTP range in approximately 10 minutes under optimal conditions. A 10-to-80 percent charge takes roughly 12 minutes. The GT53 utilizes a 106-kWh battery capable of 600-kW charging.
To manage the vehicle’s massive footprint and weight, AMG developed the ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension system. This setup incorporates active pitch-and-roll stabilization and hydraulic dampers instead of conventional anti-roll bars. Standard equipment on the GT63 includes carbon-ceramic brakes, active rear-axle steering, and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ variable all-wheel drive.
Interior, Tech, and Active Aerodynamics
Inside the driver-focused c**kpit, the vehicle features a 14-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch instrument panel, and an optional 14-inch passenger display running the MBUX system integrated with AI capabilities from ChatGPT, Microsoft, and Google. To replicate a traditional combustion engine experience, an AMGFORCE Sport+ mode simulates gear changes, sound profiles, and seat vibrations.
Exterior aerodynamics feature an adjustable AEROKINETICS roof spoiler on the GT63 and GT55, alongside front air louvers that actively manage cooling airflow. Despite its sloping roofline, the cabin retains rear seating for three passengers, offering 21.4 cubic feet of trunk space alongside a 2.8-cubic-foot front trunk. Pricing details have not yet been released.
