October 12, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

Residents across New York City must adjust their waste disposal schedules on Monday, October 12, 2026, as the city observes Italian Heritage Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has officially announced that there will be no trash, curbside composting, or recycling collection on the holiday.

DSNY Holiday Schedule and Instructions

According to the DSNY, households that normally receive waste collection services on Mondays must hold onto their materials during the day. Residents can place their trash, curbside composting, and recycling materials out at the curb on Monday evening, October 12. Regular collection operations will resume the next morning, beginning on Tuesday, October 13.

City sanitation officials have also issued a warning regarding potential delays following the holiday pause. Crews will work to clear an accumulated backlog of waste across the boroughs, meaning some residents might experience longer waits than usual for their bins to be emptied.

Additional City Services and Parades

In addition to municipal sanitation changes, the U.S. Postal Service will pause regular mail delivery on Monday for the federal holiday. , the NYC Department of Records offices will be closed for the day and will reopen on Tuesday, October 13.

The DSNY is also participating directly in local holiday celebrations. A contingent from “The Strongest” will march in the annual Columbus Day parade and take charge of cleaning up the entire parade route both before and after the festivities.
