Both parents of a toddler who brought a loaded handgun inside a backpack to Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton Township on September 28 face criminal charges. The parents were scheduled for arraignment before Judge Joe Barone in the 35th District Court.
Daycare staff discovered the holstered weapon inside the child’s backpack on a Monday morning and secured the firearm immediately. Their swift intervention prevented any injuries at the facility, located on Sheldon Road, before local authorities were notified.
Quick Staff Response Prevents Tragedy
Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy publicly praised the daycare worker who noticed the weapon in the classroom and intervened without delay.
That teacher – once recognized that a firearm was in the classroom – took immediate action, said Joseph Bialy, Police Chief.
Bialy noted that reviewing surveillance video showing the young child handling the weapon was deeply troubling. “The video is hard to watch, but Iām comforted by the fact that nobody was injured,” Bialy told reporters.
Parental Backgrounds and Legal Context
Investigators confirmed that the toddler’s father works as a police officer in a neighboring community, while the mother is employed as a nurse. Authorities coordinated closely with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to handle the formal charging process for both parents.
Under Michigan law, firearm owners must securely lock up weapons at home when minors are present. Penalties for violating these storage laws escalate significantly if a child gains access to an unsecured firearm.
Daycare Implements New Safety Protocols
In response to the incident, Children’s World Early Learning Center announced immediate enhancements to its security measures. These include mandatory backpack checks for all arriving students. Daycare director Adrienne Bogedain confirmed that the child involved is no longer enrolled at the facility.
“At Children’s World, there is nothing we take more seriously than the safety, security and well-being of the children entrusted to our care,” the center said in a formal statement. “We understand the concerns this event has caused our families, and as educators and parents ourselves, we fully share those feelings.”
Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community. The investigation remains active as authorities review how the toddler managed to access the weapon.
