Greater Manchester Police arrested 17 people on October 7, 2026, during a series of raids targeting suspected organized crime groups operating across Heywood, Rochdale, Bury, Oldham, and Salford. The pre-dawn strikes formed the backbone of Operation Rivercrest, an enforcement effort involving more than 250 officers designed to dismantle networks responsible for local drug supply and violent crime.

Operation Rivercrest: How the Raids Unfolded

The operation began at 05:00 BST, led by officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Aid Unit. Law enforcement officers forced entry into residential properties believed to be linked to senior organized crime figures. A second wave of coordinated strikes followed an hour later, yielding additional arrests and securing vital evidence.

In total, officers executed 20 warrants across the region. While the primary focus remained on Heywood and the wider Rochdale district, target locations also spanned Bury, Salford, and Oldham, alongside cross-border addresses in Lancashire and Merseyside. Investigators confirmed that the operation resulted from months of planning involving Rochdale CID, Operation Challenger teams, and local neighbourhood policing units.

Suspects and Alleged Offenses

Authorities confirmed that the sweep resulted in the arrest of 16 men-ranging in age from 19 to 49-alongside a 21-year-old woman. Those detained face a comprehensive array of potential charges reflecting the group’s illicit activities.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the suspected offenses include:

  • Drug supply and drug dealing operations
  • Assault and violent disorder
  • Affray
  • Burglary, theft, and robbery
  • Child criminal exploitation and cuckooing

Detective Sergeant Hannah Taala of Rochdale CID described the network’s operations as a complex network of criminality. The investigation was partly catalyzed by a serious incident of public disorder in Heywood in April, which involved multiple vehicles and weapons, and left one victim with a stab wound.

Seizures and Community Impact

During the searches, officers recovered significant quantities of illicit substances, including drugs found operating across a two-floor farm setup inside a targeted property. Authorities also seized multiple offensive weapons-including machetes and knives-alongside a Surron bike and suspected stolen property. Digital forensic investigations and the recovery of multiple mobile phones have provided investigators with a large volume of evidence.

Addressing the local community, Detective Sergeant Taala emphasized that law enforcement remains committed to breaking cycles of local violence and supporting vulnerable individuals who may have been exploited by these criminal networks. “This cycle of violence stops here,” Taala stated. “We have been able to strike a significant blow against a group that has been causing misery across the Rochdale district.”

Police have urged anyone with information regarding local criminality or organized crime networks to come forward, reassuring residents that neighbourhood teams and specialized units are actively listening and prepared to take further decisive action.
