Law enforcement agencies are investigating a fatal shooting on the upper deck of the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday evening. Authorities believe the incident stemmed from a road rage dispute during rush-hour traffic, leaving a 46-year-old New York man dead.
The victim is Koran Irvine, a resident of Rockland County, New York, who worked for Con Edison. Irvine was off duty at the time of the shooting, driving his blue Volkswagen Golf westbound toward New Jersey.
Details of the George Washington Bridge Incident
Investigators from the New York Police Department and the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD) report that the fatal encounter began just after 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Surveillance footage shows that Irvine’s vehicle nearly collided with another vehicle on a ramp leading to the bridge’s westbound upper level.
Investigators believe this near-collision triggered a dispute between the drivers. As both vehicles moved across the bridge-one of the busiest motor vehicle crossings in the world-an occupant of the second vehicle allegedly opened fire.
Irvine sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange. His vehicle continued traveling westbound before stopping against the median near the middle of the bridge.
Emergency Response and Hospitalization
Emergency responders initially received reports of a single-vehicle traffic crash on the westbound upper level of the bridge. Upon arrival, PAPD officers discovered that the driver was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel transported Irvine to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Ongoing Police Search and Investigation
The suspect vehicle fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Law enforcement agencies have not yet released a definitive description of the car or the gunman. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been announced.
The violent encounter caused major disruptions for evening commuters. Police closed the westbound lanes of the bridge’s upper deck to process the crime scene, gather physical evidence, and conduct initial interviews. The lanes remained closed for approximately six hours before reopening shortly before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
Employer and Community Reaction
Representatives for Con Edison expressed sorrow over the sudden death of their employee, releasing an official statement:
“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him.”
The Port Authority Police Department and local authorities are urging anyone with information, dashboard camera footage, or details regarding the vehicles involved to come forward as the search for the suspect continues.
