South Africa secured a commanding 32-run victory over Australia in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. This win gave them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Powered by brilliant centuries from captain Temba Bavuma and explosive batter David Miller, the Proteas posted a formidable total of 365-9 in their 50 overs.
The series victory continues South Africa’s strong recent run against Australia, marking their 19th ODI win in their last 25 meetings. Despite a valiant effort in the run chase, Australia’s middle order faltered under intense spin pressure. The visitors were bowled out for 333 in 49.5 overs.
Bavuma and Miller Lead Proteas Batting Charge
After being sent in to bat under tricky early conditions, South Africa weathered initial blows from Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood. Hazlewood removed openers Aiden Markram for a duck and Quinton de Kock for 15. However, captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller steadied the innings with a crucial 156-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Bavuma anchored the innings with a resilient 103 off 116 deliveries, marking his sixth ODI century. At the other end, Miller delivered a devastating counter-attack, smashing 142 from just 93 balls. Miller’s career-best ODI knock included 12 fours and nine towering sixes, completely shifting the momentum of the match.
Late contributions from Matthew Breetzke (34 off 28) and Duan Jansen (27 not out) pushed South Africa to 365-9. For Australia, young seamer Jack Edwards-playing in only his second ODI-was the standout bowler. He claimed impressive figures of 5-67 in his 10 overs, including the vital scalps of both centurions. The visitors’ bowling depth was further tested by a side strain to Nathan Ellis, which restricted him to just four overs.
Australia’s Middle Order Stumbles Again
In a near carbon-copy of their opening match defeat in Durban, Australia launched a blistering response. Openers Mitch Marsh (84 off 53) and Travis Head (84 off 76) put on 130 runs in just 17 overs, threatening to chase down the massive target.
However, once South Africa introduced spin, the innings dramatically unraveled. The Proteas’ three-pronged spin attack of Keshav Maharaj (2-54), Bjorn Fortuin (2-70), and Aiden Markram (1-55) effectively squeezed the run rate during the middle overs.
Markram trapped Head lbw, while Maharaj removed Alex Carey (17) and Matt Renshaw (32) via lbw decisions. Xavier Bartlett provided late resistance with an aggressive 50 from 28 balls, but it was not enough to prevent Australia from falling 32 runs short.
Post-Match Reactions and Upcoming Fixtures
Reflecting on the loss, Australia captain Mitch Marsh admitted the ongoing struggles during the middle phases of the game.
“It’s really disappointing. We came here determined to level the series at 1-1 and take it into the final game, but fair play to South Africa. I thought they played really well and outplayed us again. We just want to keep improving. We certainly don’t want to be whitewashed, so we’ll go to Potchefstroom determined to win that final game and play some good cricket,” Marsh said.
Proteas skipper Temba Bavuma praised his side’s complete team performance, highlighting the resilience shown after losing early wickets.
“It was another really good all-round team performance. It started with the bat. Conditions were a little tricky up front, but we managed to get through that period and build towards a good total. David played an unbelievable innings, and then the bowlers did their job as well,” Bavuma stated.
The third and final match of the ODI series is scheduled to take place in Potchefstroom on Wednesday, before both teams transition to a three-Test series starting in Durban on October 9.
