Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has committed a historic $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University. This marks the largest individual donation in U.S. higher education history. Announced on September 30, 2026, the massive financial pledge will reshape the institution. It will establish a brand-new campus in Miami, Florida, while funding major expansions at the university’s flagship home in Pittsburgh.
The record-breaking contribution eclipses the previous high-water mark in higher-education philanthropy. That record was a $2 billion gift made by Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife Penny to the Oregon Health & Science University in August 2025. Following the gift, Griffin will join Carnegie Mellon’s board of trustees.
Funding Breakdown: Miami Campus and Pittsburgh Expansion
The $3 billion pledge is split strategically between regional growth and campus enhancement:
- Miami Campus ($2 Billion): Two-thirds of the donation will fund the creation of CMU Miami. This 35-acre site is located in the city’s artistic Wynwood neighborhood. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the campus expected to open its doors to students in 2028. Once fully operational, it aims to house 3,500 to 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It will be supported by roughly 300 faculty members and 600 staff.
- Pittsburgh Campus ($1 Billion): The remaining $1 billion will bolster the main campus in Pennsylvania. This includes a dedicated $500 million investment directed toward the School of Computer Science. This school will be officially renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. The rest will support flexible university priorities.
A New Curriculum Focused on Societal Challenges
CMU Miami will break away from standard educational models by discarding traditional academic majors. Instead, it will feature an interdisciplinary curriculum. According to university releases, programs will focus entirely on major societal challenges. These include human health and biological discovery, national security and strategic capabilities, energy and climate resilience, and advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation.
Carnegie Mellon President Farnam Jahanian noted that artificial intelligence and modern technological shifts served as primary catalysts for rethinking higher education design. The facility will also incorporate designated spaces for corporate research laboratories and venture studios to foster local economic development.
Philanthropy and Griffin’s Move to South Florida
The donation continues Ken Griffin’s deep financial investment in South Florida. He relocated Citadel’s global headquarters from Chicago to Miami in 2022. Over the past four years, Griffin’s regional philanthropy has included $50 million contributions to several institutions. These include the University of Miami’s cancer center, the Baptist Health Foundation’s neuroscience institute, and the Success Academy charter school network.
Prior to the Carnegie Mellon announcement, Griffin’s largest personal donation was a $300 million gift to his alma mater, Harvard University, in 2023. His latest contribution underscores his ongoing shift toward supporting academic and economic institutions that embrace dynamic, growth-oriented environments.
