A prolonged and dangerously hot heat wave is set to scorch Southern California starting Friday, Oct. 2, 2026. Temperatures could reach as high as 105 degrees and linger for up to two weeks, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS has issued an extreme heat watch taking effect Friday morning. The alert remains active through Oct. 8 in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and through Oct. 7 in the Inland Empire and Orange County, with a strong possibility of extension into the following week. While October warmth is common in the region, meteorologists emphasize that the multi-week duration of this specific high-pressure ridge makes the weather event extraordinary.
The Unusually Long High-Pressure System
A stubborn high-pressure dome is building over California and is expected to become firmly entrenched by the weekend. Unlike typical Santa Ana wind events that blow in for a day or two, this weather pattern lacks a quick exit strategy.
“Unfortunately, it just hangs around for a long time. The pattern is not conducive to getting this high pressure out of here anytime soon,” said Kyle Wheeler, an NWS meteorologist.
Severe offshore winds are not anticipated. However, the atmospheric setup will feature dry conditions and slight offshore breezes, causing relative humidity levels to plummet. This environment significantly elevates the risk of wildfires, particularly in the foothills and mountains across the Inland Empire, Ventura County, and Orange County.
Regional Temperature Breakdowns
Different parts of Southern California will experience varying degrees of the relentless heat:
- Los Angeles County: Valleys are expected to reach triple digits, up to 105 degrees, while coastal areas will hover around 90 degrees starting Friday.
- Orange County: Inland portions will see the highest peaks, hitting the upper 90s to near 100 degrees over the weekend. Coastal beaches will stay in the 80s.
- Inland Empire: Cities near the Santa Ana Mountains, including Lake Elsinore, Ontario, and Riverside, face peak daytime highs between 98 and 105 degrees, accompanied by warm overnight lows in the low 70s.
- Ventura County: Coastal spots like Ventura and Oxnard could see upper 80s to low 90s. Inland communities such as Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, and Simi Valley will reach the high 90s, and Ojai will exceed 100 degrees.
Broader Climate Context and Safety Recommendations
This October heat wave arrives on the heels of record-breaking heat across the state. NOAA data indicates that California and surrounding counties have experienced their warmest multi-year periods on record, reinforcing long-term regional warming trends.
Local authorities and NWS officials urge residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses:
- Limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.
- Drink plenty of fluids and stay hydrated.
- Wear loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing.
- Stay in air-conditioned environments whenever possible.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
- Exercise extreme caution with outdoor activities to avoid sparking fast-moving brush fires.
