United Arab Emirates officials launched an official investigation following a midair brawl on Flydubai flight FZ1073 that forced an emergency diversion to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. This incident raised urgent questions about international pilot screening standards. The incident occurred approximately two and a half hours into the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the aircraft abruptly dropped from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet within a single minute during an altercation between the two pilots.

Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national with nearly 9,750 flying hours and over a decade of experience at SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in 2022, sustained stabbing injuries during the onboard struggle. Despite his wounds, Captain Machchhar managed to release the cockpit door lock. This enabled passengers and crew to rush forward and overpower the co-pilot attacker before the aircraft suffered catastrophic destruction.
UAE Attorney General Initiates Formal Probe
The UAE Attorney General, Hamad Saif al-Shamsi, announced the state’s formal investigative action regarding the severe security breach. Authorities deployed a specialized team of public prosecutors to examine every aspect of the cockpit confrontation.
"Collect information and evidence to determine the truth of the incident, its circumstances, details, and motives, and to verify the extent of its connection to any terrorist activity or purpose, or the existence of prior planning or direction for it," stated UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi.
Saudi Arabian authorities subsequently took the alleged attacker into Omani national custody for medical treatment and further questioning, though official charges and comprehensive psychological assessments remain pending.
International Reactions and Security Reassessments
The harrowing sequence of events sent shockwaves through international diplomatic and aviation circles. Out of the 174 passengers on board the flight, 166 were Israeli citizens returning from Dubai. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu greeted the survivors upon their arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. He publicly praised both the wounded pilot and the passengers who intervened.
- Flight Route: Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport, diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
- Altitude Drop: Plummeted approximately 17,000 feet within one minute over Jordanian airspace.
- Casualties & Heroism: Captain Smit Machchhar hospitalized with non-life-threatening stabbing injuries; passengers and off-duty crew credited with overpowering the co-pilot.
- Airline Response: Flydubai immediately suspended all scheduled flights between Dubai and Israel pending the outcome of security audits.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Captain Machchhar as a hero, stating that his extraordinary valour and quick thinking under pressure helped save hundreds of lives. Meanwhile, aviation security experts across the Middle East are re-evaluating cockpit door protocols, psychological monitoring, and co-pilot background verification processes to prevent similar incidents in commercial aviation.
