A 21-year-old University of Georgia student survived after falling eight stories from an open apartment window at the Rambler Athens Apartments on Saturday evening. Athens-Clarke County police records show that the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the West Broad Street student housing complex.
Investigators stated that the student was dancing on a couch near an open window inside an eighth-floor unit when she lost her balance. She fell eight stories and landed on a second-floor pool deck. Authorities noted that a cushioned metal bench on the pool deck helped soften the impact.
Emergency Response and Medical Condition
Emergency medical services rushed to the scene. Athens-Clarke County Police Department spokesperson Lt. Katie Jenkins confirmed that the student was conscious and alert when first responders arrived, despite the severity of the drop.
She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not released her name or a detailed medical update, but reports confirm she sustained serious injuries.

The incident occurred at Rambler Athens, a luxury off-campus student housing development at 558 West Broad Street near downtown Athens and the UGA campus. Completed in August 2024, the eight-story, 600,000-square-foot building has over 340 residential units and 750 beds.
Management at Rambler Athens released a formal statement:
“Our thoughts are with the resident and their family. We are grateful to learn they are receiving treatment. We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding what occurred.”
Building management also issued a safety reminder to residents. They noted that community windows feature safety limiters and urged tenants not to tamper with or disengage the protective devices.
High-Rise Window Safety Regulations
The accident has drawn renewed attention to window safety standards in high-rise multi-family housing. Under Section 1015.8 of the International Building Code, operable windows in residential buildings with sill heights under 36 inches and located more than 72 inches above the ground must include fall prevention devices. These measures usually involve opening limiters that restrict window openings to under 4 inches or meet ASTM F2090 standards.
