British counter-terrorism police have released five men on police bail following their arrest in connection with a suspected bomb and drone plot targeting RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The suspects, all British nationals in their mid-20s residing in London, were detained on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses after a major security incident unfolded near the U.S.-operated airbase on Sunday.
The arrests took place in the village of Whelford on Sunday evening after reports of suspicious activity involving three vehicles. The incident triggered a massive emergency response, including the use of helicopters and military assets, leading to the evacuation of approximately 85 households. Local residents were displaced to hotels and leisure centers while a large police cordon remained in place throughout Monday.
Investigation into Foreign State Involvement
Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed that while the men have been released, the investigation remains highly active. The suspects are reportedly subject to “stringent conditions” regarding their movement and contact with others.
A central focus of the ongoing inquiry is whether the suspects were acting as proxies for a foreign power. “To be very clear, this does not mean the investigation is over,” Taylor stated. “We are exploring multiple lines of inquiry, including that this may be actively committed by proxies or individuals either knowingly or unknowingly working on behalf of a foreign state.”
The investigation comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions. RAF Fairford is a critical installation used by the United States Air Force, specifically for B-1B Lancer bombers involved in operations against Iranian military targets. In July, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had publicly labeled the base a “legitimate target.”
Iran Denies Connection to Plot
Following the arrests, the Iranian Embassy in the UK issued a formal statement categorically rejecting any involvement in the alleged plot. The embassy described the suggestions of Iranian links as “unfounded and malicious speculations” designed to fuel “Iranophobia propaganda” in the United Kingdom.
The embassy’s statement on social media emphasized that the allegations were being circulated in the wake of what it termed “criminal acts of aggression” by the United States and Israel against the Iranian people.

The security alert was initially triggered by a local farmer who spotted three vehicles parked in a “strange formation” blocking a road near the base. The resident reported seeing a group of “hooded and masked men” who fled into nearby woods upon being spotted. This report led to the rapid mobilization of armed police and specialist units.
