UK to Nationalize Avanti West Coast Rail Service in March 2026

September 28, 2026 2 min read 0 comments

The British government has announced that rail operator Avanti West Coast will be brought into public ownership on March 7, 2026. The move brings forward the transfer date following widespread service delays and cancellations across the country’s north-western rail network.

The Department for Transport will take over the key route connecting Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, and London immediately after the current private contract expires. The operation was originally scheduled to transition to public control in October.

Underperformance on the line had previously disrupted high-profile travel, leading Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to take an initial trip to Number 10 North by private jet. Passengers on the route have experienced frequent service interruptions for years, with performance continuing to lag behind industry averages.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed that nationalisation will be supported by a comprehensive improvement plan focused on passengers rather than shareholders. The government plans to invest an extra £10 million for power and signalling maintenance, adding to the £840 million previously pledged to improve infrastructure on the West Coast Main Line.

Additional funding includes £50 million designated for upgrading London Euston station, which will provide £11 million for extra seating, improved waiting areas, and upgraded toilets. , other stations along the line will receive £10 million in funding by the end of 2027.

Avanti West Coast is currently operated by First Trenitalia, a joint venture between British transport group FirstGroup holding a 70% stake and Italian state-owned railway operator Trenitalia holding 30%. The transition marks the latest step in the Labour government’s broader strategy to return essential transport services to public hands ahead of establishing Great British Railways.

Responding to the announcement, Andy Mellors, Managing Director at Avanti West Coast, stated that the company would work closely with the government over the coming months to ensure a seamless transition into public ownership. The operator noted its past investments, including refurbishing its Pendolino fleet and introducing new Evero trains.

The upcoming March transfer makes Avanti West Coast one of several major rail networks returning to state control as part of the ongoing structural transition across the British railway system.
