Universal Pictures has officially announced the title for its next installment in The Mummy franchise. Titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead, the legacy sequel will hit theaters on October 15, 2027. It brings back original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to their iconic roles.
A True Legacy Sequel With Returning Stars
Fans of the 1999 adventure film have long awaited a continuation of the original storyline. The Mummy: Book of the Dead reunites Brendan Fraser as Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as Evie O’Connell. The new film bypasses the 2008 third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in which Weisz’s character was recast.
Several other familiar faces from the original films are set to return. John Hannah will reprise his role as Jonathan Carnahan. Oded Fehr returns as Ardeth Bey, and Kevin J. O’Connor comes back as Beni Gabor. They will be joined by new cast members Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.
Creative Team and Production Details
The upcoming sequel is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence. The filmmakers previously helmed 2022’s Scream, Scream VI, and Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. The screenplay for The Mummy: Book of the Dead was written by David Coggeshall, who worked on The Family Plan.
Producer Sean Daniel, who worked on five previous entries in the franchise, returns to produce alongside Project X Entertainment’s William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and Clayton Townsend. Brendan Fraser and Hivemind’s Jason F. Brown will serve as executive producers.
Franchise History and Cultural Impact
The modern era of The Mummy franchise began with Stephen Sommers’ 1999 blockbuster, which blended supernatural thrills, action, and humor. The original film and its direct sequel, The Mummy Returns (2001), made Fraser and Weisz a popular cinematic adventure duo. Combined, the theatrical features in the franchise have earned over $1.8 billion at the global box office.
Reflecting on the enduring legacy of the 1999 classic during its 25th anniversary, director Stephen Sommers noted its persistent popularity. “It’s so funny how it just never went away,” Sommers shared. “It’s always on TV somewhere… somehow, it’s endeared itself to a lot of people.”
What to Expect from The Mummy: Book of the Dead
Official plot details remain under wraps, but the title references the franchise’s roots. The Book of the Dead was a central plot device in the first two films. It was used to awaken the sorcerer Imhotep and later to combat him. With the O’Connells returning, the ancient text will likely play a major role in the new threat they face.
Production continues to ramp up as Universal prepares for the film’s October 15, 2027 theatrical release date, promising a nostalgic thrill ride for fans of the franchise.
