Actor Warwick Davis is returning to the Wizarding World. He will reprise his role as Professor Filius Flitwick in the upcoming HBO television adaptation of Harry Potter, slated to debut in 2027. Davis originally portrayed the Charms Professor and the goblin Griphook across the eight original films over an 11-year period. He currently stands as the only original film cast member confirmed to cross over into the new series.
The announcement was made during the annual global Back to Hogwarts celebration on September 1, 2025. The first season of the project consists of eight one-hour episodes designed to serve as a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s initial novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Expanding the Hogwarts Cast for the HBO Series
Alongside Davis’s return, HBO unveiled seven additional casting announcements during the showcase. These fill out key faculty positions, student houses, and financial institutions within the magical realm.
New staff members joining the faculty table include Sirine Saba as Professor Pomona Sprout and Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns. Durden’s casting marks the first time audiences will see the ghostly History of Magic teacher brought to life onscreen. Additionally, the Hogwarts Hospital Wing is staffed with Bríd Brennan taking on the role of Madam Poppy Pomfrey, the healer responsible for treating magical injuries.
The student body also welcomes three new actors: Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle. Outside of the school grounds, Gringotts Wizarding Bank gains a new employee. Leigh Gill, known for his work in Joker and its sequel, takes over the role of the goblin Griphook.
Production Details and Creative Team
Production for the series officially began in the summer of 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire. This is the exact location where the original eight films were shot. The television project is expected to span a decade, providing screen time to explore the plotlines of the books without the time constraints of feature films.
The creative team features Francesca Gardiner serving as writer and executive producer. Mark Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple episodes. The series is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
The series will premiere in 2027 on HBO and Max platforms where available, including international launch markets such as Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
