The BBC has released a first-look trailer and promotional artwork for the third installment of the BAFTA-winning anthology drama series Time. Written by screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and Samuel Bailey, the three-part series shifts its focus to a Young Offenders Institution (YOI). It examines the heavy toll of locking up teenagers and the psychological impact on the staff who look after them.

The third season premieres on BBC iPlayer at 6 a.m. and BBC One at 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Episode two follows on Monday, October 12, with the final episode airing on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Produced by BBC Studios Fiction in co-production with BritBox for North America, the drama was filmed entirely on location in Belfast with support from Northern Ireland Screen.

Plot and Narrative Tension in Season 3

The trailer takes viewers inside the unstable environment of the YOI, highlighting escalating tensions and moral dilemmas. The narrative centers on custodial manager Bobby Bailey, played by franchise newcomer David Tennant, and returning prison chaplain Marie-Louise O’Dell, portrayed by Siobhan Finneran.

According to the synopsis, Prison Chaplain Marie-Louise arrives at the facility while experiencing a deep personal crisis of faith. When a major tragedy strikes inside the prison walls, she clashes with veteran officer Bobby Bailey, a man wrestling with internal turmoil. Bailey holds crucial knowledge regarding the circumstances that sparked the disaster, leaving viewers to wonder whether he will clear his conscience before guilt catches up with him.

The series also tracks two teenage inmates, Peter, played by Ollie McNulty, and James, played by Louis McCartney. They navigate the reality of their first weeks and months behind bars. James faces his broken parents following an act of violence, while Peter weighs whether to tell the truth about the death of an innocent man or prioritize family loyalty. An unlikely friendship between the two boys offers hope for a changed future, though surviving the institution remains an uphill battle.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Building on the critical acclaim of its first two seasons-which starred Stephen Graham and Sean Bean in Series 1, and Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance, and Bella Ramsey in Series 2-the latest chapter features a large ensemble cast.

Joining David Tennant and Siobhan Finneran are Daniel Ryan as Custodial Manager Freddie Jennings, Vinette Robinson as Erica, Jo Joyner as Nicola, Warren Brown as Albie, and Ethaniel Davy as Jayden. The young offender roles feature Louis McCartney as James, Ollie McNulty as Peter, and Chukwubuikem Molokwu as Christopher. Victor Zhao, Paul Smith Junior, Finn Kearns, and Jack Barnes make their screen debuts as Jietang, Toby, Mark, and Chaz.

The series is directed by Paul Whittington (Dear England, This Town) and produced by Amanda Black (Blue Lights, World on Fire). Executive producers include Josh Cole, Andrew Morrissey, and Michael Parke for BBC Studios Fiction, Lucy Richer for the BBC, Jon Farrar and Jess O’Riordan for BritBox, and co-creator Jimmy McGovern. Global sales are handled by BBC Studios.

Audiences can watch the first two complete series of Time on BBC iPlayer ahead of the Series 3 premiere on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
