Emergency services have suspended an extensive overnight search for a man who reportedly fell overboard from a passenger ferry east of the Isle of Arran in Scotland. HM Coastguard called off the operation early Monday morning after rescue teams found no trace of the individual.

The incident began at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 18, when HM Coastguard received alerts that a man had gone overboard from the CalMac passenger ferry, the MV Caledonian Isles. The vessel was operating east of Arran at the time of the emergency.

Multi-Agency Response Deployed Off Arran

A large-scale multi-agency rescue operation was immediately launched to sweep the waters. The coordinated search involved extensive assets from air, sea, and land:

  • Two HM Coastguard rescue helicopters
  • An HM Coastguard surveillance aircraft
  • RNLI lifeboats launched from Girvan and Campbeltown
  • Coastguard Rescue Teams stationed at Arran, Ayr, Ardrossan, and Greenock

An RNLI spokesperson noted that the Girvan crew was deployed just before 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, while the Campbeltown lifeboat joined the active search shortly after midnight to assist HM Coastguard personnel.

Search Suspended Pending New Information

Despite a thorough overnight sweep of the designated maritime zones, rescue crews failed to locate the missing individual. HM Coastguard officially stood down its active response at approximately 4:55 a.m. on Monday, October 19.

In an official statement, an HM Coastguard spokesperson confirmed: "After an extensive search no one was found and the HM Coastguard response was stood down at about 4.55am on 19 October, pending any new information."

Impact on Ferry Services and Ongoing Police Inquiry

Police Scotland was notified promptly and has launched a missing person inquiry. Authorities confirmed they are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson for ferry operator CalMac stated that the crew aboard the MV Caledonian Isles is fully cooperating with Police Scotland and HM Coastguard as part of the ongoing investigation.

The emergency incident caused operational disruptions across regional transport routes. Multiple sailings between Ardrossan and Brodick were cancelled on Monday morning. CalMac later updated passengers via social media, announcing that the MV Caledonian Isles would resume service with the 12:30 sailing from Ardrossan, though journeys remained vulnerable to short-notice alterations or cancellations due to the earlier disruption and high seasonal traffic volumes impacting alternative ports like Troon.
