The beloved British sitcom Ghosts is officially returning with a feature-length film titled Ghosts: The Possession of Button House. After concluding its acclaimed five-season television run on BBC One in December 2023, the supernatural ensemble is reuniting for a new cinematic adventure scheduled for a UK theatrical release on October 23, 2026.
The original core creators, writers, and stars-Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond-have penned the upcoming comedy film. They will be joined by returning fan favorites Lolly Adefope as Kitty, Charlotte Ritchie as Alison Cooper, and Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Mike Cooper. Simon Hynd, who directed episodes of the television series and Motherland, is set to direct the movie, with filming taking place at West Horsley Place in Surrey, the real-life location used for Button House.
What to Expect from The Possession of Button House Plot
The film picks up the story after Alison and Mike sold Button House to a hotel developer. According to details shared ahead of production, 112 days have passed without any construction beginning on the property. This leaves the resident spirits trapped in their familiar historic surroundings while the future of the manor remains uncertain.
The movie introduces a major supernatural twist: a development that allows the ghosts to possess living people. This mechanic gives the spirits a rare chance to venture beyond the manor’s traditional grounds. Alongside the familiar haunting crew, the narrative features a group of children breaking into the house, environmental protesters, a corrupt member of Parliament, and a troubled foster child named Jack, played by Scott Ellis Watson.
The Journey Back to Button House
When the television series wrapped up in 2023 with a finale watched by 7.2 million viewers, the cast and creators believed the story had reached its definitive end. However, conversations initiated by executive Alison Carpenter at Monumental Television eventually sparked a new creative direction.
“We thought we had said goodbye to Button House at the end of the final series. We never planned to come back,” the creative team stated following the announcement. “But when we had the idea for this story, we all got so excited that we couldn’t resist returning to our haunted home for one more adventure.”
Production on Ghosts: The Possession of Button House is backed by BBC Film, Lionsgate, BBC Studios, and Monumental Television. While the television format has inspired international adaptations in the US, France, Germany, Australia, Greece, and Czechia, this new feature film brings the original British creators back together for what promises to be a soul-stirring tale of life and death on the big screen.
