Ahead of the Season 23 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, Chandra Wilson shared that the medical drama’s cast has been rallying behind co-star Harry Shum Jr. as he competes on Dancing With the Stars. Appearing on The View on Thursday, October 15, Wilson revealed that the cast turns Tuesday night broadcasts into a group show of support right from the set.
During her daytime television appearance to promote the hit ABC series’ return, Wilson also introduced a sneak-peek clip featuring her character, Miranda Bailey. In the clip, Bailey questions whether she should continue pursuing a master’s degree in public health after missing classes due to heavy workloads and other hospital obligations.
The conversation quickly shifted from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to the ballroom, focusing on Shum Jr.’s impressive run on the dance competition series and how his fellow actors are cheering him on behind the scenes.
Balancing Grey Sloan and the Ballroom
Shum Jr., who plays Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan, has been managing a grueling double schedule. He films early days on the medical drama before heading straight to dance rehearsals. His dual commitments sparked fan curiosity, especially after his character was fired at the end of Season 22 for secretly administering an unapproved experimental treatment to a patient.
Despite his character’s sudden employment status, behind-the-scenes set photos and Shum Jr.’s active presence confirm that he remains part of Season 23 in some capacity. Whether Dr. Kwan successfully appeals his firing or returns in a different narrative context remains one of the season’s tightly guarded secrets.
Cast Camaraderie and Support
Wilson’s comments on The View highlight the tight-knit bond among the Grey’s Anatomy ensemble. The cast has made it a tradition to watch and support Shum Jr.’s journey alongside professional partner Jenna Johnson. As Season 23 unfolds on ABC, viewers will watch how Dr. Kwan’s storyline resolves while cheering for Shum Jr. week after week in the ballroom.
