Josh Duhamel Criticizes Netflix Over Ransom Canyon Cancellation

Actor Josh Duhamel has broken his silence regarding Netflix’s decision to cancel the Western romance series Ransom Canyon after two seasons, expressing genuine surprise and frustration with the streaming platform’s choice.

In an interview with Us Weekly published on October 19, 2026, the 53-year-old actor opened up about the abrupt end of the Texas-set drama. Duhamel, who starred as rancher Staten Kirkland alongside Minka Kelly’s Quinn O’Grady, admitted he expected the show to secure a third-season renewal because of its strong performance metrics following its debut.

Josh Duhamel Expresses Disappointment Over Netflix’s Decision

During the interview, Duhamel did not hold back about his initial reaction when he learned the series would not return. He noted that the romantic family drama consistently performed well on the platform’s viewership charts.

“I was pretty surprised, if I’m being honest,” Duhamel told Us Weekly. “I thought [it was safe] because the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good and people really loved the show.”

He added that he felt disheartened for the dedicated audience that had grown attached to the intersecting lives of the Texas Hill Country families.

“I was a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show, but that’s the business,” Duhamel continued. “At the same time, I get it. They have their reasons for why things stay and why things go. I don’t always understand those reasons, but it’s not my job to question. I’ve just gotta move on. I just feel bad for the fans who are really invested in it, and that’s it, unfortunately.”

Performance and Production Background

Often described by viewers as a blend of Virgin River and Yellowstone, Ransom Canyon developed a passionate following across its two seasons. Although the second season entered Netflix’s top charts upon its July release and even drew the first season back into view, industry reports noted that Season 2 viewership dropped roughly 43% compared to the premiere run, paired with a considerable overall production budget.

Fortunately, unlike many scripted series left on major cliffhangers, showrunner April Blair wrapped up the sophomore run without an unresolved plot disaster, though fans and creators alike anticipated further storytelling opportunities in small-town Texas.

Looking Ahead to Future Cowboy Roles

While Staten Kirkland has officially hung up his saddle, Duhamel made it clear that his time playing western characters is far from over. The actor shared that he naturally gravitates toward rugged, rural settings and would gladly embrace similar roles in future projects.

“I really loved playing that character,” Duhamel reflected. “It was in my wheelhouse… I’d much rather play a cowboy than a defense attorney.” He noted that he has several prospective television and film concepts currently under consideration.

Co-star Minka Kelly previously addressed the show’s conclusion on Instagram in September, expressing gratitude to the cast, crew, and devoted fanbase by writing, “All good things must come to an end. And so it is. Thank you all for giving us two beautiful seasons!” While Ransom Canyon will not return for Season 3, both seasons remain available to stream on Netflix for audiences wanting to revisit Staten and Quinn’s romance.
