Man Critically Injured After 80-Foot Rappelling Fall in AZ

A father suffered critical injuries on Saturday, Sept. 26, after falling approximately 80 feet while rappelling on the same rope with his 1-year-old child in Arizona’s Virgin River Gorge area near the Ghost Valley Trailhead and Interstate 15.

Emergency medical personnel dispatched to the scene found the toddler either unharmed or sustaining minor injuries, according to conflicting preliminary reports from local authorities. Medics ultimately hiked the toddler safely out of the steep canyon.

Multi-Agency Technical Rescue Operation

Rescue crews from Beaver Dam Fire Rescue, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Washington County Search and Rescue coordinated a complex technical extraction. The grueling operation lasted roughly three hours in steep, rocky terrain near the Cedar Pocket area.

Rescuers initially requested an aerial assessment via helicopter, but the rugged local terrain lacked a suitable landing zone. Consequently, ground-based rope teams had to pull the injured father from the canyon using a rescue stretcher.

Following the extraction, the father was transported via ambulance and helicopter to St. George Regional Hospital for urgent medical treatment in critical condition. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fall.

First Responders Issue Remote Recreation Warnings

In the wake of the incident, emergency services have renewed public warnings regarding the extreme hazards associated with remote backcountry rappelling and rock climbing.

  • Assess Risks: Carefully evaluate environmental conditions and technical requirements before undertaking remote descents.
  • Recreate in Groups: Avoid solitary or pairs-only outings in isolated technical terrain where communication and self-rescue are restricted.
  • Be Prepared: Ensure appropriate gear, medical supplies, and emergency communication devices are packed for every backcountry excursion.

Official data from the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs indicates that approximately 600 search-and-rescue missions are conducted across the state’s rugged backcountry each year, highlighting the vital need for caution during outdoor recreation.
