Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland may have clashed on screen, but their shared journey is far from over. Following the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Mark Ruffalo discussed the long-standing connection between Bruce Banner and Peter Parker. He described their recent interaction as merely a teaser for future stories.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette titled “Friends and Foes” included with the film’s digital release, Ruffalo opened up about bringing the two iconic heroes together. “Hulk and Spider-Man finally meeting up, it’s iconic and legendary in the comics,” Ruffalo stated in the promotional clip. “And I think the way we do it is really a teaser for what’s to come with these two characters.”

How Spider-Man: Brand New Day Set Up the Conflict

Spider-Man: Brand New Day marked the first time the web-slinger and the Green Goliath interacted significantly within the MCU. Initially serving as a scientific ally and mentor figure to Peter Parker, Bruce Banner’s trajectory shifts dramatically during the film. Sadie Sink’s character, Jean Grey, strips away Banner’s inhibitor device, triggering the return of the uncontrollable Savage Hulk.

The resulting confrontation at the Department of Damage Control headquarters in New York leveled the facility and injured several employees. The brutal fight left a shaken Banner questioning his actions before landing in a psychiatric ward by the film’s conclusion. Meanwhile, post-credits sequences have tied both characters into the wider multiversal narrative leading toward Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom taking an interest in Banner.

Comic Book Roots and Future MCU Team-Ups

In Marvel Comics, Spider-Man and the Hulk share a rich history dating back to early publications like The Amazing Spider-Man #14. While their dynamic has frequently involved intense physical clashes, they have also stood side-by-side as allies in major crossover events and alternate team configurations.

With both characters currently scattered across different corners or off-world timelines following the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans and industry insiders speculate that a formal team-up could occur in upcoming milestone events. Whether they find themselves thrown together in Doctor Doom’s domain or fighting side-by-side in future Avengers installments, Ruffalo’s comments indicate that creators have plenty of room to explore their classic comic book relationship further.
