Netflix Adds Both Gladiator Films to October Library

October 9, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Netflix is expanding its streaming library with a major historical epic double feature. The platform is officially bringing both Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and its 2000s legacy continuation, Gladiator II, to the service. Subscribers can stream both films starting on October 21. This release allows viewers to experience the complete cinematic journey of Rome, betrayal, and revenge back-to-back.

The addition follows the theatrical success of Gladiator II, which debuted in cinemas in November 2024. The sequel grossed over $462 million worldwide. It emerged as one of Ridley Scott’s highest-grossing and most successful commercial outings since The Martian. Bringing both features together on the same day offers a seamless streaming experience for fans of large-scale historical action.

The Legacy of the Original 2000 Epic

Released in 2000, the original Gladiator remains a cornerstone of modern historical cinema. The film stars Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius. He is a loyal Roman general whose life is shattered when the corrupt Emperor Commodus-portrayed memorably by Joaquin Phoenix-betrays him, orders the execution of his family, and forces him into slavery.

Maximus rises through the brutal ranks of provincial arena fighters. He returns to the Colosseum in Rome to seek ultimate vengeance. The picture won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. Critical reception remains exceptionally high decades later. The film holds an 80% critics’ score and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, an 8.5 out of 10 rating from over 1.9 million users on IMDb, and ranks No. 26 on Empire’s list of the 100 best movies of all time.

Inside the 2024 Sequel: Gladiator II

Set decades after the events of the first film, Gladiator II shifts its narrative focus to Lucius Aurelius, played by Paul Mescal. As a child, Lucius was sent away from Rome for his own protection. In the sequel, invading Roman forces conquer his home. This forces him into slavery and drives him to follow in the footsteps of Maximus as a gladiator rebelling against imperial tyranny.

The sequel features a star-studded ensemble cast. It includes Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Peter Mensah, and Rory McCann, alongside returning franchise veterans Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi. Critics and audiences frequently highlight two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington as a standout presence. He anchors the film’s darker, more cynical political maneuvering.

  • Release Date on Netflix: October 21

By pairing the Academy Award-winning original with its modern counterpart, Netflix provides a comprehensive viewing option for historical drama enthusiasts.
