Sony Japan Imposes 60-Hour Playtime Rule for PS5 Pro Purchases

October 1, 2026 3 min read 0 comments

Sony Interactive Entertainment has implemented a stringent lottery system in Japan. This system requires proof of previous console usage for consumers attempting to purchase a PlayStation 5 Pro. The measure aims to curb aggressive scalping practices and manage severe inventory shortages driven by surging demand for upcoming software titles and ongoing memory supply constraints.

Under the newly established rules, prospective buyers must register a Sony account that verifies at least 60 hours of gameplay on a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 console. This playtime must be recorded within a specific window running from September 27, 2024, to September 27, 2026. Applicants who successfully meet this mandatory playtime requirement are permitted to apply for a single console purchase through October 7.

Selected applicants will receive official notification via email by October 26 and must finalize their purchase orders by November 2. Sony plans to deliver the units during the first half of November. Any uncollected consoles will return to a redraw pool for other eligible buyers who missed out in the initial allocation.

Why Sony Imposed the Playtime Lottery

Industry observers point to two primary pressures affecting PlayStation 5 Pro stock levels across the market. The first is the ongoing DRAM and memory shortage, which has steadily increased production costs across the entire hardware manufacturing sector. The second factor is the immense anticipated demand ahead of major software releases, specifically Grand Theft Auto VI, which is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. The lottery’s purchase deadline falls just over two weeks before that major release date.

Priced at ¥137,980 in the lottery-which includes the 2TB SSD model and standard accessories-the console follows Sony’s broader price adjustments implemented in Japan earlier in the year. The strict verification gate is specifically designed to block the most common scalping method: the mass creation of fresh, empty accounts designed to buy stock in bulk for immediate resale at inflated secondary market prices.

Limitations and Impact on Real Players

While the initiative successfully blocks bulk automated purchases, industry analysts note certain limitations within the system. An account with historical playtime can theoretically still be utilized to purchase a console for resale, as the system cannot definitively prove user intent. Additionally, the rule inadvertently leaves out dedicated gamers who play on a different account, casual players who log fewer than 60 hours within the two-year window, and international tourists or buyers who lack a Japanese account and residency.

With a strict limit of one console per verified account, Sony hopes to stabilize local distribution. At present, the company has not announced whether it intends to deploy this playtime-verified lottery system in other global regions or for future limited-edition hardware releases.
