Tornadoes Destroy Buildings In Burke County After Isaias

Tornadoes linked to the severe weather bands of Hurricane Isaias tore through parts of Georgia and South Carolina. They left a path of destruction that included at least four ruined buildings on a Burke County farm property. While utility crews scrambled to restore power across the region, local officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in Burke County following the sudden storms.

Burke County Farm Takes Direct Hit

The severe weather struck a farm property located on Story Mill Road, situated between Hephzibah and Waynesboro. Property owner Wesley Bailey discovered the devastation after receiving a call from a coworker warning him that a tornado had hit his land. Drone footage captured the extent of the impact. It showed at least four separate buildings heavily damaged or destroyed. Two structures were missing significant portions of their roofs, another had an entire side ripped away, and a fourth building was completely flattened. Additionally, trucks and trailers were overturned, and a concrete-block home on the property sustained heavy damage.

Bailey noted that no one had been living in the homes on the property since a previous hurricane. He had been actively preparing to begin renovation work. Despite the structural losses, Bailey expressed immense relief regarding the lack of human casualties.

“I’m glad nobody got hurt. That’s the main thing,” Bailey said while surveying the debris. “All this can be cleaned up and replaced, but maybe it takes time. You never underestimate wind and rain or water.”

Widespread Severe Weather Across the CSRA

The destructive winds in Burke County were part of a broader severe weather outbreak. It swept across the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) as Hurricane Isaias spun off rotating storms along its outer edges. The severe weather system also triggered damage and prompted emergency warnings across Screven and Allendale counties.

In Screven County, viewers captured video of a classic stovepipe tornado sweeping through the area near Highway 21. Trees were downed across a 200-yard path. Across the river in Allendale County, the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado tracked north at 30 mph between Burtons Ferry Bridge and downtown Allendale. A sequence of tornado warnings remained active throughout the afternoon and evening hours. They stretched from Burke County into Barnwell, Aiken, Saluda, Lexington, Bulloch, and Screven counties before the final warnings expired.

Meteorological Context and Regional Impact

Meteorologists explained that the tornadoes were spawned by robust wind shear and atmospheric instability generated within the outer bands of Isaias. After making landfall as a Category 2 hurricane near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, the system tracked inland.

The storm continued to feed dangerous thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and isolated tornadoes across parts of the Southeast. Emergency management teams and utility providers across Georgia and South Carolina continue working to clear downed trees, repair damaged infrastructure, and restore electricity to affected residents.
