Family members are preparing to say farewell to Walter (Sonnie) Waldron, a longtime resident of Cross East, Cross, County Mayo, who passed away peacefully at University Hospital Galway on October 8, 2026, in his 96th year. According to his official death notice, Mr. Waldron was surrounded by his loving family during his final moments at the hospital.

Born and raised in County Mayo, Walter Waldron lived a long and full life rooted deeply in the local community of Cross. Known affectionately by family and friends as Sonnie, he witnessed nearly a century of change while remaining a familiar and cherished presence in his neighborhood. His passing marks the end of an era for his extensive family circle and the wider Cross community, where he built lifelong relationships with neighbors and friends.

Mr. Waldron was predeceased by his beloved wife, Margaret, as well as his brother Mick and sister Mary. He is survived by his eight devoted children: James, Patricia, Walter, Patrick, Michael, Breege, Bernie, and Carmel. He also leaves behind his sisters Margaret (Higgins) and Bridget (Donoghue), sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sister-in-law Nell, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and a wide circle of relatives and friends who will deeply miss his presence.

A public repose will be held at Cummins Funeral Home in Ballinrobe on Sunday, October 11, 2026, running from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Following the repose, the funeral party will move to the Sacred Heart Church in Cross.

The funeral Mass is scheduled for Monday at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart Church, followed by burial at Cross East Cemetery. Because the church lacks permanent broadcasting coverage, Cummins Funeral Directors have announced that the funeral Mass will be recorded and a YouTube link will be shared later on their official Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.
