Panama Earthquake 7.7 Magnitude Shakes Live TV Broadcasts

Television broadcasts across Panama captured the sudden, violent impact of a powerful earthquake on Friday afternoon, October 9, 2026. The magnitude 7.7 tremor struck the southeastern region of the country at 12:56 p.m. local time, catching news anchors, sports journalists, and residents completely off guard as buildings shook and programming was abruptly interrupted.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located in southeastern Panama at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 to 12 miles). Because of this shallow depth, the severe shaking was felt by roughly 4.6 million people across the country. It also triggered wide-ranging tsunami warnings for neighboring nations, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Mexico.

Live TV Broadcasts Interrupted by Tremors

Footage broadcast on networks like Telemetro Reporta showed anchors attempting to maintain composure while holding onto desks as studio lights and cameras swayed. “Amigos televidentes, acaba de ocurrido un temblor,” announced one visibly shocked presenter live on air, gripping her desk for stability as emergency coverage immediately took over.

The disruption extended far beyond newsrooms in Panama City. In Santiago, a city located approximately 60 kilometers from the epicenter, a sports broadcast on Deportes RPC was interrupted mid-discussion. Journalists realized the floor was shaking, shouted “Miren, está temblando,” and rushed to evacuate while the fixed studio camera captured items falling from shelves and shattering in the background.

Damage Reports and Government Response

Initial reports from the National Civil Protection Service indicated that damage was heavily concentrated in the central provinces of Veraguas, Herrera, and Los Santos, near the epicenter. Local news outlets shared images of a Catholic cathedral partially collapsing and hotel facades crashing onto vehicles in the city of Penonomé. Meanwhile, the Panama Canal Authority confirmed that the vital waterway continued normal operations despite the strong seismic activity.

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino urged citizens to remain calm via social media. “What happened should not be used to cause alarm or disorder,” President Mulino wrote on X, while emergency personnel deployed across affected provinces to evaluate structural integrity and investigate potential casualties.

Aftershocks and Regional Tsunami Threat

The main tremor was followed by a series of shallow aftershocks, with the USGS registering prominent secondary movements measuring 5.8 and 5.5 in magnitude. The US Tsunami Warning System cautioned that hazardous waves could impact coastal regions within hours of the initial strike, though authorities continued monitoring coastal gauges closely.

The unexpected disaster occurred just three days before Panama was scheduled to conduct a nationwide evacuation drill for major earthquakes. This timing highlighted the region’s vulnerability along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a 25,000-mile arc prone to frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
